Part time courses

Part time adult education courses are on offer in lots of different places around York, in many different subjects; from accounting to computing, politics to pottery.

Courses are often free to people claiming certain benefits. They can take place in the daytime or evenings, for a single day or a full year. You can do a course to gain new qualifications or purely out of interest. If you are under 19 get advice as there may be restrictions on what you can do. For many courses, no previous qualifications are needed.

York Learning and libraries have details of courses on offer across the city and a prospectus of part-time courses is delivered to York households each year. Details of courses in lots of different places are online at for the Learning for Everyone brochure. Courses can be booked online at or at West Offices in person.

York Learning offers Flexible Learning courses to improve your literacy, numeracy or IT skills and gain a qualification. They run courses across the city in schools and libraries, Children’s Centres, Community Centres, at Rougier House and at the Council’s West Offices. An informal assessment will help work out what level is right for you, and once started on your course you will have support from your tutor to work at your own pace.

There are Foundation Learning Programmes to help you get ready for work – see here.
